Another
day, another interview. Alliance of Fanventures take
some time to ask the team of Project Katrina about
the facts and fics of this glorious looking adventure!
Fanventures:
What style will the gameplay be in for PK?
Orion:
'Classic Sierra Style', of course. We're currently
debating on what resolution to actually use, but it
will be in the classic QfG/KQ style of gameplay. Think
of a cross between Quest for Glory and King's Quest
- you have your quests (adventure), your
puzzles (excitement) and creature battles
(really wild things) - Three things you need
- "Adventure, Excitement, and Really Wild Things".
Shandra:
We're basing it on the classic Sierra games, of course,
as that's what we all came to love about gaming, but
like Sierra did in it's glory days, we're going to
use the best technology currently available (and
feasable) for us without losing that "classic
Sierra feel".
Spearflight:
Think Half Life 2, except without the aliens, without
the gravity gun (or any gun at all ), without
the fancy 3d engine, without the first person view,
without the fancy smancy physics, without Gordon,
without the urban setting... Okay, so we really shouldn't
be thinking about Half Life 2 at all, since we're
not basing it off of that. Just the good old Sierra
style. Smile
Fanventures:
What gave you the idea for PK?
Shandra:
Ask Ori, it was his idea in the first place.... he
just dragged the rest of us in kicking and screaming
::runs from Orion::
Spearflight:
Orion was probably bored to death in a bar one night,
and some chick with a Scandanavian accent came up
and struck a conversation with him, then the light
bulb popped up over his head and he shouted "Eureka!"
Then, the Friday after in IRC he messaged me and said
"Hey, wanna do a fangame?" Then it kinda
crawled from there.
Orion:
It was mentioned on the Hero6 boards, and I was given
inspiration on the spot, but I like Spears timeline
of events better.
Fanventures:
How long has this project been going on?
Orion:
On and off for about 3 years now...mostly off though.
The project has picked up alot recently, with a fairly
new crew, and much more ambition than before. I think
the release of HOIK has given some much needed inspiration.
Spearflight:
Oh man, it's been going on quite a while now. At first
it was all ideas and the eventual goal of releasing
it. But since we started again after a brief hiatus
about a year ago ( I think ), and we got another crew
going it's been progressing a lot more quickly.
Shandra:
It's been really hard at times, because we all have
real lives, and sometimes it's hard to get ahold of
people. But with the newest additions, it's been full
steam ahead.
Fanventures:
Is the title of the game really Project Katrina?
Shandra:
PK is our "working title", like the later
Matrix movies were originally called "Burly Men"...
After we get Kat's life figured out, the title will
come as well....
Orion:
No. Project Katrina will be our 'studios' name. We
have a few titles in debate right now, but even at
that, it's still too early in production to release
an actual title.
Spearflight:
If you pay me a hundred bucks it could be. *grins*
No, we currently have no working title as of yet.
Still debating on a properly symbolic title.
Fanventures:
Can you tell us anything about the plotline?
Spearflight:
Katrina runs round the country, gets some items, learns
a few spells, meets all sorts of unique personalities,
encounters a few plot points, flips out and kills
a couple villages ( just kidding. Or am I? ), then
becomes the Dark Master.
Shandra:
It's all about getting to know Kat, and why she is
who she is... You find out she's had a really difficult
childhood compared to most girls of her time... But
it toughens her up, and helps her deal with later
problems, and why she becomes a vampire, and how that
affects her life (and death). We don't want to come
out and say "because of event X, personality
trait Y exists", but we want to give the player
some idea of why Kat has her quirks, hating men, deperately
wanting a child, and why she turned to Dark Magic
in the first place.
Orion:
It's dealing with Katrina's life before becoming a
vampire. We'll be exploring WHY she has such a hatred
for men, and her overwhelming need for a child. Of
course, they won't be easily explained as in "this
happened, and that's why it is," there'll be
a lot of minor and major events that will explain
it.
Fanventures:
Any info on release dates?
Orion:
We're still fairly early in the plot, and we've got
a new artist (as our former artist abandoned us without
notice), so things will be a bit farther off to place
an exact date.
Shandra:
When it's finished... lol
Spearflight:
As soon as I code it up. Which will be as soon as
we get the art done. Which will probably be as soon
as music gets done. Which will probably be as soon
as plot gets done. Which will probably be when the
Moon aligns with Venus, Neptune, Saturn, Sol, and
Alpha Centauri, pointing towards the center of our
galaxy. Or it could be next week ( unlikely though
that be )
Fanventures:
Will the hero from QFG be involved in the plot
in any way?
Orion:
It's not currently decided if we'll be taking the
game up to, during, and after Shadows of Darkness,
or take it up to it, and leave it there.
Shandra:
As Ori said, we're not sure how far into Kat's life
we're going to delve.... We need to keep room open
for a sequel!
Spearflight:
I doubt it, but I'm just the programmer. I have no
pull in the plot at all. Smile
Fanventures:
Will Ad Avis appear in the game?
Orion:
Most likely, yes. Can't leave those Addy FanGirl's
hanging there, can we now.
Shandra: We'd love to have him as part of the game,
but his agent keeps brushing us off and won't return
our calls.
Spearflight:
Dunno. He seems to be a tough guy to get ahold of.
His agent said something obscure about winning the
lottery and quantum computing.
Fanventures:
Will Katrina be able to cast spells in the game?
Orion:
Of course. There are plans to incorporate "Dark"
magic in not-so-dark ways, and of course usin
Shandra:
Kat is the Dark Master to be... She had to learn her
spells somewhere.
Spearflight:
Last time I checked, she could use magic. She had
to start sometime, yes?
Fanventures:
Will the game include voice acting?
Orion:
It's currently too early on to answer that, but if
I had my say, yes there will be
Shandra:
We'd LOVE to, but it depends on how well everthing
else goes.
Spearflight:
Oh yeah yeah, you'll have me, Orion, Chester, Klausse,
and some Bum I gave a $10 bill to on the street last
week. j/k. No clue as to if we'll be able to have
voice acting or not. I'm sure everyone here would
love to, but we'll have to wait till later on in the
development cycle to be more certain. Heh, who knows?
Fanventures:
Thank for sitting through this tortulous interview,
do you have any last words?
Shandra:
Thanks for your time, and I hope everyone plays Project
Katrina when it comes out... We're all working really
hard on it, and want to share our view of Kat's life
with everone.
Spearflight:
Mirbungle, zipwath, florbescent stilluptuousity, remespede,
quilbus, porble. Need I say more? *cheesy grin*
::Thanks to Jarl Hljóðr for half of these
words::
Orion:
Amen to that, Bruder Spear
